India has a rich history of empowered women. However, gradually the status of women degraded to the extent that female foeticide got widely practised. This resulted in wide gender disparities in the Indian society. The GII (Gender Inequality Index) for India in 2013 was 0.563, ranking 127th out of 186 countries.
