India has a rich history of empowered women. However, gradually the status of women degraded to the extent that female foeticide got widely practised. This resulted in wide gender disparities in the Indian society. The GII (Gender Inequality Index) for India in 2013 was 0.563, ranking 127th out of 186 countries. Child Sex Ratio (0-6years) in India continued to decline from 945 in 1991 to 927 in 2001 and 918 in 2011 census.
